Rev Osei Kofi featured in Balck Stars’ 3-3 draw against Real madrid in 1962
Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Reverend Osei Kofi has revealed that he was subjected to criticisms when he stated that the Black Stars, during his era, played against Spanish giants Real Madrid.
According to him, without official documentation of the historic moment, some in the younger generation question his claim and sometimes mock him.
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner suggested that the current crop of Real Madrid players, including Kylian Mbappé and other stars, are less competitive compared to the team they faced at the time, which he described as “the original Real Madrid.”

“In 1962 we played against Real Madrid in Ghana, and people insulted me when I said it. If you did not see me, that does not mean it did not exist. Mbappé and co are just drinking the soup of what had already been prepared. We played against the original Real Madrid,” he said in a viral video.
Rev Osei Kofi noted that despite being underrated by Ghanaians, he is delighted that foreigners appreciate his efforts during that game, saying, “I am grateful that if Ghanaians did not see, foreigners acknowledge that.”
The legend was honored in Spain by Real Madrid and Leganés FC in March 2025 for his stellar career and his role in the historic 1962 3-3 draw between the Black Stars and Real Madrid.
The recognition was championed by former Leganés officials, who celebrated his impact on African football in the 1960s.
