The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reaffirmed his commitment to holding the government accountable while ensuring that parliamentary business is not unnecessarily obstructed.
He emphasised that effective opposition requires both vigilance and restraint.
Mr Afenyo-Markin explained that his role demands a careful balance between rigorous scrutiny and respect for parliamentary procedure.
“My focus has been to hold the government’s feet to the fire, at the same time not being obstructive. When you are in opposition, you must have it on the back of your mind that you have a day in government tomorrow,” he stated.
Often described as controversial due to his active engagements on the floor of the House, he insisted that his actions are guided by principle rather than personal interest.
“So I’m equally mindful not to push too much and personalise matters. Else if you come back in 2029, they will also make life difficult for you. You gauge the mood of the House, but you don’t deviate from your core duty of scrutinising,” he added.
He also recounted that while there were initial challenges in building consensus within the Minority caucus, those differences were eventually resolved.
Mr Afenyo-Markin made the remarks in an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026.
