The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused some elements within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of undermining President John Dramani Mahama’s opportunity to build a lasting legacy.
He said the President’s return to office presents a rare second chance that must be handled with care.
“I think that some extremists in this NDC government are not helping President Mahama to leave a legacy,” he stated.
“It is not easy to get a second chance, and I keep telling my friends in the NDC to help the President leave a good name.”
According to Mr Afenyo-Markin, excessive partisanship and political aggressiveness risk diverting attention from governance and the long-term national interest.
“But it appears that our friends are so hooked onto politics that every now and then they forget themselves,” he said, adding that valuable time has already been lost.
“Already one year is gone.”
He urged members of the governing party to place national interest above political point-scoring, arguing that history would ultimately judge the administration not by rhetoric but by its record of leadership and outcomes.
Mr Afenyo-Markin made the remarks in an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026.
