Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu
Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has lauded the work of the Minority Whips, describing them as central to his leadership and the operational strength of the opposition caucus.
Speaking on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026, he emphasised that leading the Minority can be overwhelming, making a well-coordinated whip team crucial.
Afenyo-Markin singled out Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip, for his organisational prowess, while praising Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon and First Deputy Minority Chief Whip, for his advocacy and growth in the role.
‘My job is to help the party secure victory’ – Minority Leader
“Habib came in first as a deputy whip and went through grooming. For some time, I allowed him to take up procedural issues and you realise that he is very strong in terms of advocacy,” he said.
He also highlighted Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe and Second Deputy Minority Whip, as a reliable backup within the leadership team.
“The three of them have become my anchormen. Without them, [I] cannot function as a Minority Leader. You need a strong whip who understands parliamentary procedure; he is like your national security advisor,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin added that a disciplined and strategic whip system is key to holding the government accountable and ensuring the Minority functions effectively in Parliament.
