Mfantsipim Senior High School has outlined a five-pillar reform agenda to strengthen academic, infrastructure and national education impact as the school prepares to mark its sesquicentennial.
Addressing a pre-launch press briefing in Accra yesterday, the Chairman of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee, John B. Yamoah, said the anniversary would go beyond ceremonial observance and serve as a strategic platform to consolidate the institution’s legacy while repositioning it for the future.
“For a century and a half, Mfantsipim has shaped generations of leaders – statesmen, professionals, academics, clergy, sportsmen, and innovators-men who have served the nation and the world with distinction.
“This Sesquicentennial is, therefore, more than a school anniversary-it is a national celebration of 150 years of secondary education in Ghana,” he added.
Founded in 1876 by the Methodist Church Ghana, Mfantsipim is widely regarded as the cradle of formal secondary education in the country.
Focus
The anniversary, on the theme: “A legacy of excellence, leadership and service to inspire the future,” will be anchored on five strategic pillars.
They are – celebrating the school’s heritage, strengthening academic delivery, improving infrastructure, deepening alumni and community engagement, and contributing meaningfully to national education development.
The committee, which was inaugurated in August 2024, had constituted sub-committees to drive implementation of the programmes in collaboration with stakeholders.
They include the Methodist Church Ghana, the Ministry of Education and the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA).
Mr Yamoah mentioned key legacy projects earmarked under the reform agenda to include the upgrading of academic and residential facilities, expansion of STEM and digital learning infrastructure, enhancement of sports facilities, the establishment of a historical museum to preserve the school’s archives, and the erection of a 150th anniversary monument.
Activities
The anniversary year, which will run until December 2026, will feature significant events which would include an official launch scheduled for April 11, 2026, in Accra, followed by a series of educational, cultural and community engagements across the country.
“The success of Mfantsipim@150 depends on all of us; MOBA, staff of Mfantsipim, students, parents, the Methodist Church Ghana, corporate partners, traditional authorities, and the people of Cape Coast and of Ghana.
“Together, let us honour the past, celebrate the present, and secure the future of this great institution by investing in it,” Mr Yamoah said.
He warned that any unauthorised reproduction or commercial exploitation of the trademarked logo or memorabilia would attract legal sanctions.
A representative of the Methodist Church, Rt Rev. Emmanuel Borlabi Bortey, said mission schools were established not merely for literacy but for moral and spiritual transformation.
He said that education was central to spreading the Gospel and building integrity-driven societies.
Significance
The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, described the anniversary as a platform to assess and advance secondary education nationally.
Using Mfantsipim as a benchmark, he said GES would strengthen STEM, digital learning, teacher development and access to quality education, and ensure that such standards were replicated across the country to meet 21st-century demands.
For his part, the Headmaster of the school, Very Rev. Ebenezer K. Aidoo, described the anniversary as a celebration, a call to action, and an investment in the future.
He urged alumni to mobilise resources, strengthen networks and influence to strengthen infrastructure, digital learning and holistic education, among other initiatives.
