The Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a four-day-old baby boy who was allegedly stolen from the Mamprobi Polyclinic, leading to the arrest of a female suspect.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the police said the incident occurred on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, when an unidentified woman reportedly disguised herself as a nurse and unlawfully entered the hospital.

According to the police, a formal complaint was received shortly after the incident, prompting immediate investigations.

“The Mamprobi District Police Command received a complaint that an unidentified woman disguised as a nurse unlawfully entered the postnatal ward of the Mamprobi Polyclinic and stole a newborn baby boy belonging to Precious Ankomah,” it noted.

Following what authorities described as intensive investigations, officers from the Dansoman Divisional Command arrested the suspect, identified as Latifa Saliu.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect could not provide any medical records to substantiate her claim that she delivered the baby at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. She was accordingly arrested and detained to assist ongoing investigations,” the statement indicated.

The police said the baby has since been reunited with his mother.

“The baby has been reunited with his mother, Precious Ankomah, who positively identified the baby as hers through a distinctive birthmark on the left leg. The baby has been referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical care,” the statement noted.

In response to the incident, the Regional Police Command said it “Put in place additional security measures. A 24-hour police presence has been deployed at the Mamprobi Polyclinic to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.”

The police also cautioned the public to remain vigilant, particularly within healthcare facilities.
