The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has rejected claims that the absence of a substantive Defence Minister has created a vacuum within Ghana’s security architecture.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Thursday, February 19, he explained that ministers do not implement personal policies but rather execute policies approved by the government and led by President John Dramani Mahama.

He further clarified that there is currently a minister responsible for defence who is capable of carrying out all required duties of the office.

“That another minister is acting as Defence Minister does not in any way prevent him from implementing those policies. There is no lacuna,” the official stressed.

According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama has already indicated that he will appoint a substantive Defence Minister at an appropriate time.

“The President has not indicated any difficulty whatsoever. He believes it ought to be done at the right time, and when that decision is made, it will be communicated,” he stated.

Addressing concerns over recent security developments, including the terrorist attack in Burkina Faso, the government insisted that all necessary steps have been taken to respond appropriately.

The government maintains that national security operations remain intact and coordinated, dismissing suggestions that the absence of a substantive minister has weakened Ghana’s defence posture.
