General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has clarified reports regarding a cash donation purportedly offered to Hajia Amina Mahama, widow of the late Ayawaso East MP, by the Majority Caucus.

Speaking to TV3 Ghana on February 15, 2026, Kwetey stated that the donation was not sanctioned by the party, emphasising that any support extended was the initiative of individuals and not an official party decision.

“Speaking to some of the key leaders like the Majority Leader and Majority Chief Whip, they clearly did not know anything about this particular donation,” he said.

“I am not sure about the Majority leadership as a whole. I think it is individuals, and those individuals portrayed that they were representing the Majority as a whole,” Kwetey added.

Acknowledging the public sympathy that naturally arises in such bereavements, he said: “She lost her husband, so naturally you will have people who will have that kind of sympathy.”

He further stressed that decisions at the party level are guided by established principles rather than personal preferences.

“At the party level, there was no such [decision]; we took our decision purely based on what ought to be,” he explained.

Background

The campaign manager for Mohammed Baba Jamal, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, had accused the party’s Majority Caucus in Parliament of favouring Hajia Amina Mahama during the recent primaries.

Baba Alhaji Khalid told the media that several MPs had previously donated funds to Hajia Amina’s campaign to distribute to delegates, calling it “clearly meant to influence the election.”

He questioned why the same MPs were now demanding investigations and the annulment of the results.

“We all know they sponsored a candidate with money for the election. For them to turn around and accuse someone else because their preferred candidate lost is unacceptable,” Khalid said.
