Jean Mensa is the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana

Former Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has dismissed petitions seeking the removal of Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensa and her deputies, describing them as politically motivated rather than based on objective grounds.

His comments follow Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s ruling that the petitions against the Electoral Commissioner, her deputies and the Special Prosecutor lacked sufficient merit to warrant investigations.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, on February 22, 2026, Dr Okoe Boye argued that partisan dissatisfaction is fueling calls for Jean Mensa’s removal.

He suggested that lingering resentment over the dismissal of former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei continues to shape perceptions of Mensa’s leadership.

“With what I have experienced, I can say that it is only politics that will cause people to write letters to say that let’s remove the woman.

“Some have not forgiven her because she came in when Charlotte Osei was removed. She had no hand in Charlotte Osei’s removal. If anybody is dealing with her objectively in this country even NDC and NPP and we are looking at her behaviour and her works and not where she is coming from, you will judge her differently,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.

Dr Okoe Boye pointed to the Assin North by-election as evidence of the Commission’s neutrality, noting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won convincingly despite the New Patriotic Party (NPP) being in power at the time.

He also highlighted the 2020 general election, where results were declared swiftly and transparently, leading the incumbent president to concede within hours.
