The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, John Darko, has provided support to students and key institutions worth GH¢500,000 within the constituency.
As part of the support, 34 students studying in various tertiary institutions were provided with scholarships, while 12 apprentices, including persons with disabilities, were each presented with a sewing machine to help them in their training.
Other items presented included wheelchairs, arm clutches, walking aids, air conditioners, refrigerators, laptop computers, motorbikes, rechargeable lamps, metal school chairs, projectors and a projector screen.
Institutions that benefitted included the Municipal Fire station, Kwapra Health Centre, Suame Municipal Hospital, Suame Technical Institute, Municipal Education Directorate and Magazine Clinic.
Response
At the event, Mr Darko said the gesture, which was in response to a request made, was intended to support the beneficiary individuals and institutions to carry out their mandate towards improving the municipality for the benefit of all.
He noted that aside from representing the constituents in parliament, it was incumbent upon him to identify certain pressing needs of the people and institutions and assist towards addressing them.
“As MP for the area, I am duty-bound to prioritise the developmental needs of the people to bring relief to them.
This is what motivated me to provide this timely support to some individuals and institutions,” he said
Particularly, he charged the institutions to take very good care of the items and equipment received to last longer, saying, “I urge you to put them to good use”.
Take TVET serious
He used the occasion to encourage students to pursue studies in Technical and Vocational and Education Training (TVET) as it was the surest way towards addressing unemployment among the youth.
He said, “I have resolved to support the Suame Technical Institute to position them to train the needed human capital to support Ghana’s industrialisation. If many of the youth acquire technical skills, it will prevent them from engaging in acts that will destroy their lives”.
On the presentation of refrigerators to the health facilities, he indicated that it would go a long way in the preservation of drugs for onward administration to patients who visit such facilities to receive medical care.
Gratitude
The Principal of Suame Technical Institute, Nurudeen Ansomah, welcomed the presentation of 500 metal tables and chairs to the school, as it would tackle the furniture deficit in the institute with a current student population of 1,150.
For her part, the Municipal Director of Health Services, Caroline Wuni, pledged to take good care of the items to enable them to provide quality health care services to the people within the area.
