The move follows the issuance of formal queries to officers assigned to escort the trucks

Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has revealed that customs officers linked to the suspected diversion of 18 articulated trucks under a transit arrangement are facing possible interdiction as investigations intensify.

The move follows the issuance of formal queries to officers assigned to escort the trucks out of Ghana, with authorities expected to take disciplinary action after their responses are reviewed.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, February 23, 2026, the Deputy Finance Minister said the government has initiated internal disciplinary processes aimed at holding accountable any officials found to have breached established procedures.

“The Minister gave directives to the Commissioner General of Customs to act immediately. The report I got from the Commissioner General as at last night indicates that they have started their internal processes and we expect that by close of day today or tomorrow, some disciplinary actions will take place. It is going to happen,” Nyarko Ampem said.

According to him, the Minister for Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, has already directed the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to act swiftly following the interception of the trucks.

Ampem disclosed that officers responsible for escorting the cargo under the transit arrangement have also been formally queried and are required to respond within a specified timeframe.

“Queries were issued to the officers who were assigned to escort the trucks out of Ghana and they are expected to respond by end of day today. After that, the necessary action including interdiction, will happen. The interdiction will happen,” he stated.

The Deputy Finance Minister stressed that the government is determined to restore discipline within customs operations and clamp down on organised transit fraud schemes.

The investigations stem from the interception of 18 articulated trucks at the Akanu and Aflao border posts on February 18, 2026.

The trucks, loaded with assorted goods including cooking oil, spaghetti, and tomato paste, had reportedly been declared for transit to Niger but were suspected to have been diverted into the local market, thereby depriving the state of much-needed revenue.
