The police have announced the arrest of four suspects following a robbery attack that ended the life of Mr Andrew Amakwaah at Tigo Junction in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The father-in-law of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, was attacked by the armed gang on February 10, 2026.
He was reportedly trailed for his Toyota Hilux vehicle and shot while resisting them.
The victim is reported to have passed on at the hospital where he was receiving medical treatment.
Arrest
The suspects were in a coordinated and sustained operation by the Ashanti Regional Commander, the Regional Intelligence Bureau, Anti-robbery team and Cyber Vetting team of the CID headquarters.
The first of the four suspects, identified as Akwasi Manu, was nabbed on February 18 and found in possession of a mobile phone belonging to the deceased.
He was arraigned on February 20 on a charge of possession of stolen property, with further probe leading to the arrest of Rashid Tanko from a hideout at Atonsu High School Junction on February 19.
Two additional suspects, namely Kwadwo Amponsa and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, were arrested on 21 and 22, respectively.
A fifth suspect, identified as the leader of the gang, suspect Eric Duku, is reported to have sustained a gunshot wound leading to his death, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Yohuno, reported at a presser on Monday.
We have arrested four suspects, including three members of the gang that was responsible for the attack. A fourth suspect, believed to be the gang leader, died from a gunshot wound sustained during the operations.
“Our investigation revealed that this criminal syndicate led by the deceased Eric Duko specialize in the snatching of pickups and land cruiser vehicles, particularly ash and black-coloured ones, which they sell to a contact at Paga. The gang also have some contacts with some persons at Offinso and in Dubai, as well as contacts with some goro boys at DVLA who facilitate the preparation of fake vehicle documents for them.”
He said they have been linked to similar robberies at Tarkwa, Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti region, leading to their enlistment on the Western Central Police Command’s Wanted List.
Modus Operandi
They identify, monitor and trail their unsuspecting victims until they have an appropriate opportunity to strike.
When the victim resists, they fire their weapon, the IGP said.
The police boss also disclosed how the group had planned a similar attack in Tarkwa today.
