The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has confirmed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of Andrews Amankwa, who was shot during a robbery incident at Ohwim Tigo Junction in Kumasi

He made this known during a press briefing on Monday, February 23, 2026.

“I’m happy to announce that we have arrested four suspects, including three members of the gang that was responsible for the attack,” he remarked.

The IGP explained that as soon as the case was reported, he constituted a special team comprising the Ashanti Regional Commander, the Regional Intelligence Team, the Anti-Robbery Unit, and the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team of the CID Headquarters to immediately commence investigations.

“As we always do when such cases are reported, I immediately constituted a team… to commence investigations,” he stated.

The first breakthrough came on February 18, 2026, with the arrest of Akwesi Menu, who was found in possession of the deceased’s Samsung mobile phone.

“Upon following several leads during the course of our investigation, we had our first breakthrough on February 18 2026,” Tetteh Yohuno noted.

The IGP said he was subsequently put before the Sokoban Circuit Court 2 on February 20, 2026, charged with possession of stolen property and remanded into police custody to reappear on March 5, 2026.

According to him, further intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of Bashiru Tanko, alias “Tiki,” at Atonsu in Kumasi on February 19, 2026.

Police drop latest update on suspects in murder of police officer at Zebilla

Two additional suspects: Kwadwo Amponsah, alias “Kamakaze,” and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, alias “Tola,” were arrested on February 21 and 22, 2026, near Buokrom and Danyame in Kumasi, respectively.

The IGP further disclosed that during the operation, the alleged gang leader, Eric Antwi Doku, sustained gunshot wounds and later died at the hospital.

“Suspect Eric Acheampong Adu, who sustained gunshot wounds during the operation, has passed on. Our investigation further established that this criminal syndicate, led by the deceased suspect, specialised in the snatching of pickup and Land Cruiser vehicles,” the IGP said.

The IGP assured the public of the service’s commitment to fighting violent crime.

“We will leave no stone unturned. By every legal means possible, we will continue to come after you. We will pursue you, arrest you, and bring you to justice. That is a promise,” he boldly stated.

He further urged members of the public to support police efforts by providing credible information on criminal activities.

“Criminals out there, take note of this, you can run, but you cannot hide,” he added.
