A Childhood Shaped by Responsibility
Long before lecture halls and research publications, Dr Abugre’s classroom was the grazing field. As a young cow shepherd, he learned lessons that no textbook could offer — patience from the slow rhythm of cattle, endurance from the harsh northern seasons, and responsibility from guarding livestock entrusted to his care.
Education, however, required extraordinary determination. From primary school through junior high, he walked between five and ten miles daily to attend classes. During the dry season, dust clung to his feet; in the rainy season, muddy paths tested his resolve. Many mornings began before sunrise, and evenings often ended with exhausted steps back home.
The schools he attended, like many in underserved rural communities, struggled with limited resources. Teachers were few, textbooks were scarce, and entire subjects sometimes went untaught.
Yet, rather than surrender to these setbacks, young James turned scarcity into motivation. When instructors were absent, he relied on curiosity. When books were unavailable, he leaned on self-study and determination.
Sacrifice at Home
After long treks to school, he returned home to support his parents on their farm. His parents, humble peasant farmers, labored tirelessly to sustain the family. Their hands, hardened by years of agricultural work, quietly shaped the foundation of his dreams.
Even when harvests were uncertain and finances stretched thin, their commitment to his education never wavered. Under dim lantern light at night, fatigue often competed with ambition.

“They planted seeds in the soil,” Dr. Abugre reflects, “but more importantly, they planted belief in my heart.”
Rising Through Academia
The road from rural shepherd to scholar was neither smooth nor guaranteed. There were moments of doubt, hunger, and uncertainty. Yet through discipline and faith, he steadily advanced through higher education, studying across three universities and qualifying with two professional bodies.
His academic pursuit ultimately led him to earn a PhD at University of Ghana, the country’s premier university. What began as a distant dream beneath the wide skies of Binaba became a defining achievement.
Along the way, Dr. Abugre transitioned from student to educator. He has contributed to academic research, published scholarly work, and shared knowledge within and beyond Ghana’s borders. His voice has also contributed to national-level discussions, reflecting both expertise and lived experience.
Despite these accomplishments, he remains deeply connected to his roots.
“No matter how tall the tree grows, its roots remain in the ground,” he says, echoing an African proverb that mirrors his life philosophy.
