Only 191 ambulances are currently functional, while 127 are not working

One hundred and twenty-seven (127) out of the National Ambulance Service’s 318 ambulances are currently not operational, according to the Clinical Auditor for the Southern Zone, Martin Ewuah Amoah.

In an interview on February 23, 2026, Martin Ewuah Amoah disclosed that out of the Service’s 318 ambulances nationwide, only 191 are currently functional, while 127 are not working.

According to the Clinical Auditor for the Southern Zone, ambulances are designed to last about five years, after which they should be replaced to avoid operational challenges associated with aging vehicles.

Ambulance Crisis: Only 2 out of 6 vehicles working in Ahafo Region – Manager

“We have 318 stations but currently, we have 191 in commission [functional] and 127 out of commission [not working] for obvious reasons because an ambulance has a life span of 5-years. So, after five years, there should be some steps to replace them. Otherwise, like any vehicle, high maintenance issues will crop up if we’re not able to get a new fleet to replace old ones,” he explained.

His statement come amid concern following the death of 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah, who was involved in a hit-and-run accident at the Circle Overpass in Accra on February 6, 2026.

Charles Amissah, who worked with Promasidor Ghana Limited, producers of Cowbell milk and other food products, was reportedly attended to and stabilised at the scene by Emergency Medical Technicians from the National Ambulance Service.

However, reports indicate that he was unable to receive immediate admission at three major health facilities in Accra, the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, and the Police Hospital.

He was allegedly turned away over a period of nearly three hours due to a lack of available bed space. He later died.
