Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, the Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), says the Birim River in the Eastern Region is showing early signs of improvement following a clean-up trial using ionic nanocopper technology.
Speaking on JoyNews Desk on February 24, Prof. Nana Ama Klutse says the effects are already visible.
“We are currently applying the ionic nanocopper technology to the Birim River. Our goal is to start with Birim as a pilot project, then extend the approach to other water bodies,” Prof. Klutse explained.
She added, “We are already seeing the separation of water from mud. Within an hour, I’m confident this water will be safe for drinking. The results are very promising.”
On the technology, Prof. Klutse noted, “Ionic nanocopper is used to chemically treat water contaminated with heavy metals. It helps clean polluted water efficiently.”
She emphasised the long-term objective: “Ultimately, we want all our water bodies clean. We also aim to ensure that both legal and illegal miners treat their water before releasing it into rivers or onto land, protecting our environment and public health.”
The project is still ongoing, but early results suggest the technology could play a major role in restoring Ghana’s rivers.
