The Oti Regional Second-in-Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), D.O.1 Francis Agbavitor, has cautioned first-time drivers to exercise extreme care when using the Asukawkaw road, describing it as challenging and potentially dangerous for unfamiliar motorists.
The warning follows a fatal road accident on Sunday, February 22, 2026, which claimed the lives of two people.
Mr Agbavitor disclosed that five other deaths had also been recorded at the same location between January and February 2026.
He advised drivers to study the road carefully, familiarise themselves with the route, and adopt defensive driving practices to reduce the risk of accidents.
According to him, although the road is not in a poor state, its nature makes it difficult to navigate, especially for inexperienced drivers.
He therefore appealed to the National Road Safety Authority to increase the placement of road signs and educational materials to better alert road users.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Oti Regional GNFS Command, Sub-Officer Maxwell Ashong, told the Ghana News Agency that fire personnel stationed at Pai-Katanga in the Krachi East Municipality responded to the incident at about 4:00 a.m. after receiving a distress call about an overturned trailer truck.
He said a four-member rescue team was dispatched to the scene and conducted nearly seven hours of intensive operations to retrieve the bodies of the two deceased persons, which were badly mangled.
The bodies were later handed over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further investigations.
Sub-Officer Ashong further advised drivers to prioritise rest and avoid fatigue, particularly during long journeys from Accra to the Oti Region.
“Drivers should stop, rest briefly, and continue their journey to help prevent accidents,” he added.
