The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Ghanaian nationals to refrain from non-essential travel to Mexico in the face of unrest in selected cities.
It has also encouraged nationals residing in Mexico to exercise extreme caution in their movement in the affected cities.
“Ghanaian citizens in the jurisdiction are encouraged to maintain communication with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico for consular assistance if the need arises,” it relayed in a statement on February 25.

“The Government of the Republic of Ghana conveys its solidarity to the Government of the United Mexican States and expresses its confidence in the ability of the Mexican authorities to bring the situation under control,” it added.
Cities including Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Oaxaca have witnessed armed clashes, arson of vehicles and road blockages, which have caused casualties and significant disruption to daily activities since February 22.
This followed an operation conducted by Mexican security forces, which led to the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguem Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The unfolding violence is a coordinated cartel retaliation for the death of El Macho.
Meanwhile, the government of Ghana conveyed its solidarity to the Government of Mexican States, while expressing its confidence in the authorities’ ability to bring the situation under control.
