Polls by Global InfoAnalytics indicate that the majority of cocoa farmers have welcomed the reduction of the farmgate prices of cocoa by the government.
According to the polls, 56% see the new price as fair while only 11% deem it unfair.
On the other hand, a survey on voters’ impressions showed that 44% of voters believe the new prices offered by the government are fair, with 31% saying they are unfair.
Twenty-six per cent were neutral.
Analysis of the poll by regions shows that a slim majority of voters in Ahafo, Ashanti, Bono, Greater Accra, Northern and Western North believe the price is unfair, with the Western North registering the largest displeasure, with a whopping 62% say it is unfair.
On party lines, while 53% of NPP voters believe it is unfair, only 14% of NDC voters believe it is unfair, and 29% of floating voters believe it is unfair.
However, 24% of NPP voters believe it is fair, 61% of NDC voters believe it is fair, and 42% of floating voters also believe it is fair.
Price Reduction
The government of Ghana, on February 12, announced a reduction in the prices of farmgate cocoa for the rest of the 2025/26 crop year.
The beans now sell at GHS41,392.00 per tonne and GHS2,587.00 per bag, a reduction from GHS3,228.75 per bag and GHS51,660 per tonne.
It cited a drop in the world market price of cocoa from an average of US$7,200 per tonne to US$4,100 per tonne as motivation for the reduction in farmgate prices.
