The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intensified its internal disciplinary measures in 2026 to take action against persons found complicit in high-profile transit cargo investigations that cause financial loss to the state.

According to Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, the Authority is determined to crack down on illicit cargo crimes as part of strengthened anti-smuggling enforcement measures aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s economy.

GRA interdicts five customs officers

Since the beginning of 2026, the GRA has made arrests, carried out interceptions, and prevented the diversion of goods, particularly along Ghana’s borders.

A. Five Customs Division Officers interdicted

In a press release on February 24, 2026, the GRA announced the interdiction of five officers from its Customs Division following irregularities uncovered during an enforcement operation.

The action stemmed from a February operation that revealed documentation inconsistencies and possible procedural breaches relating to a transit cargo consignment declared for Niger.

B. Seizure and interception of loaded trucks

Commissioner-General Sarpong confirmed the interception of about 18 trucks suspected of carrying smuggled goods, including cooking oil, as part of intensified enforcement efforts to protect Ghana’s economy.

Twelve of the trucks were believed to be part of a consignment of 18 articulated trucks that had been electronically cleared from the Customs system as transit goods. They were declared as goods in transit from Akanu, destined for Niger through Kulungugu.

C. Major customs enforcement operations

As part of ongoing government measures through the GRA, a series of strengthened customs enforcement operations have been rolled out across key transit corridors and border entry points.

The Authority has also increased post-clearance audits and surveillance to clamp down on misclassification, under-declaration, and the diversion of goods into the local market.

The government has directed the GRA to conclude investigations within one week, with interdictions and other actions expected once investigations are complete, ensuring that appropriate sanctions are applied to those involved.
