The Director-General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), Dr Eric Asuman, has corrected what he describes as a widespread misconception about the agency’s operations, stressing that GMet remains indispensable to national development despite operating physical offices in only 10 of Ghana’s 16 regions.

Speaking on the theme ‘Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow,’ at the launch of 2026 Meteorological Awareness Month on February 24, 2026, Dr Asuman emphasised the urgent need to strengthen and formalise the agency’s infrastructure to ensure weather services reach those who need them most.

He noted that accurate forecasting can only be achieved when the right equipment and infrastructure are evenly distributed across the country to address existing gaps.

Clarifying concerns about regional coverage, Dr Asuman explained that GMet’s structure reflects Ghana’s former 10-region arrangement prior to the creation of six new regions.

“Traditionally, we had 10 regions in the country before they were broken down. For instance, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo used to be one region. We have an office in Sunyani, which serves the entire traditional Bono and Ahafo areas,” he stated.

He added that the same arrangement applies in the northern sector, where the Tamale office serves not only the Northern Region but also Savannah and the other regions that were carved out of it.

“For the purpose of our forecast, we cover everywhere. The locations mentioned are where we have offices, but our broadcast information is not limited to one region or location. We cover the entire country,” he assured.

Dr Asuman further called on stakeholders and the public to support efforts to promote meteorological awareness and strengthen the agency’s capacity to deliver timely and reliable weather information nationwide.
