Here’s how much parliament approved for GETFund, Free SHS

Parliament has approved significant financial allocations to support Ghana’s education sector under the 2026 Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) formula.

The GETFund will receive GH¢9.8 billion, while the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme has been allocated GH¢4.2 billion to sustain its operations.

For the tertiary education sub-sector, GH¢1.5 billion has been earmarked to ensure the smooth delivery of services.

Of this amount, GH¢300 million will go toward scholarships for continuing students under the GETFund scheme, with additional provisions made for new sponsorships covering both local and international programmes.

The formula also dedicates GH¢230 million to completing basic school infrastructure projects and GH¢310 million to constructing new facilities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education.

Established as a statutory body, the GETFund plays a crucial role in financing educational development across Ghana. It provides scholarships to qualified students for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, covering tuition, accommodation, and academic materials.

Priority is often given to fields such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), agriculture, and education, reflecting the nation’s development needs.
