The Director of Communications at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), William Boateng, has revealed that electricity consumption in Accra alone can consume the entire generation capacity of the Akosombo Dam.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Boateng explained that the country is currently in its peak power consumption period, which typically runs from December to March.

He disclosed that Accra’s load demand exceeds 1,000 megawatts, describing the capital as a major hotspot for overloads. Kumasi, he added, is also experiencing similar pressure on the system.

According to Mr. Boateng, more than 100 transformers supplied by the Ministry have already been installed, with additional units being procured to ease pressure on overloaded areas.

He apologised to customers experiencing outages, clarifying that the ongoing planned maintenance works are not a return to “dumsor” but are largely due to localised faults and, in some cases, poor workmanship on low-voltage lines.

Mr. Boateng assured the public that the Ministry and ECG are actively working to resolve these challenges and improve power supply reliability.
