Government has approved the payment of gratuity arrears to retired military personnel under Constitutional Instrument 129, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced.
The payments are to resolve a longstanding impasse over the gratuity formula under CI 129.
This was contained in a statement issued in Accra by the Department of Public Relations of the GAF and signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin (Ghana Navy), Acting Director General, Public Relations.
It said the current Military High Command, upon assumption of office, initiated engagements with the Ministries of Finance and Defence to resolve the five-year stalemate, which had remained unresolved since 2020.
The statement said the consultations had resulted in a clear two-year phased implementation roadmap.
Under the approved arrangement, all personnel who retired from November 2020 will receive arrears based on the new gratuity formula.
Payments will be made in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027, with the first tranche expected to be released by close of business on Friday, February 27, 2026.
A total of 238 officers and 2,153 soldiers are expected to benefit from the exercise.
The statement noted that all future retirements would be processed fully in line with CI 129 to ensure timely payment of entitlements.
It said the development brought closure to a matter that had remained unresolved for years and ensured that affected personnel, as well as those who would retire subsequently, received their full benefits at the correct rate.
The statement said the Military High Command expressed appreciation to the Government for supporting the resolution of the issue.
