Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has had a rare opportunity to meet Ghanaian nationals who were captured by Ukraine while fighting for Russia.

The meeting took place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, after meeting the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In a Facebook post, the Minister confirmed that the two prisoners of war were alive and well, with their rights under international law being ‘commendably respected’ by Ukrainian authorities.
