Health workers demand accountability over disappearance of validated salary arrears.
Many nurses and midwives across Ghana have expressed their frustration and anger after records of months of salary arrears allegedly disappears from the payroll system.
According to the health workers, after patiently waiting for months to receive salary arrears that they were assured had been validated, the records have suddenly gone missing.
Each month, the arrears appeared on their payment vouchers, yet no money was paid into their accounts.
“Now, they say even those recorded arrears have vanished,” they decried.
The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Ghana has accused the government of wiping out validated salary arrears from members’ payment vouchers without making any corresponding payments.

The group has described the development as “deeply troubling” and is demanding immediate accountability.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 26, 2026, the Coalition explained that affected members consistently saw their salary arrears validated in the payroll system every month, despite not receiving the actual funds.
“However, upon the most recent validation for February 2026, these accumulated arrears have suddenly and completely disappeared from our Payment Vouchers,” the statement said.
According to the group, the sudden disappearance has left many front-line health workers confused, frustrated, and feeling betrayed, especially after months of hoping the outstanding payments would eventually be settled.
The Coalition further alleged that when the issue was raised publicly, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department quickly denied the claims.
“This denial is shocking and unacceptable,” the statement said.
The group insists that Payroll Validators and Human Resource Officers across several health facilities have independently confirmed that the arrears were indeed cleared from payment vouchers without any payments being made to the affected nurses and midwives.
“Our questions are: who authorised the removal of our legitimately earned arrears, and on what legal or administrative basis were these arrears cleared?” the statement queried.
Describing the situation as both unjust and dishonest, the Coalition said the development reinforces long-standing concerns about transparency in the management of their salaries.
“Nurses and midwives who have worked tirelessly for this country cannot and will not accept a situation where their hard-earned income is quietly wiped away from official records,” it said.
The group is now calling on the government to urgently investigate the anomaly, restore all unlawfully removed arrears, and ensure immediate payment.
It warned that if the issue is not addressed promptly, members may be forced to take further action.
