The Jackson University College has commenced a four-year Bachelor of Education Program for the inmates of the Kumasi Central Prison.
This forms part of a collaboration between the university and the Kumasi Central Prison.
The program, which is run by distance learning, will see graduands earning degrees in Early Grade and Upper Primary Education.
The head of Education Unit, CSP. Alimatu Sadia Mohammed, explained that the rollout of the program is to fill the void created after inmates complete Senior High School in the prison.
She expressed satisfaction with the initiative, as she stated that it will produce qualified teachers for both the prison population and the nation at large.
She also commended the leadership of Kumasi Central Prison for the foresight in implementing the program, whilst advising the beneficiary students to take their studies seriously since it is a lifetime opportunity.
The maiden class comprises twelve inmates from the Kumasi Central Prison.
