Six students of the Islamic Senior High School have been arrested after the ongoing Ashanti Regional Super Zonals turned chaotic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, during the track and field events, a group of students from Islamic Senior High School allegedly began throwing stones at rivals from Kumasi High School.
The sudden violence sparked panic in the stands.
The police, supported by plainclothes national security officers, acted swiftly and arrested six Islamic SHS students to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
Chief Coordinator and PRO of the Ashanti Regional Sports Federation, Samuel Otto, confirmed the arrests.
“As we said yesterday, the police were more active. They arrested six Islamic SHS students who were stoning others, and in the course of that, the BNI people got in and quickly rushed in, and the police arrested them,” Otto was quoted by Citi News on February 26, 2026.
The trouble didn’t stop there. While attention was on the field and the clashes, thieves targeted students’ belongings in the crowd.
Several were caught and taken to the Asokwa Police Station.
“Apart from that, those who came to the stadium to watch the event and tried to take away the belongings of the students, some of them were also arrested, and the police sent them to Asokwa Police Station,” Otto added.
Organisers have now deployed over 300 police officers and three armoured vehicles to secure the 40,000-capacity venue for the remaining events.
“Things went on well yesterday, and we are expecting the same thing today, and we hope to have a successful event,” he said.
CHASS has condemned the violence and is calling for stricter measures to protect students and preserve the spirit of these competitions.
The hope now is for a peaceful finish so the focus can return to the athletes and their achievements.
