Some residents of the North Tongu District in the Volta Region have called on government to use this year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) to outline concrete measures to address stalled development projects and improve road infrastructure.
The SONA, they said, should also spell out strategies to ensure stable electricity supply to support businesses and livelihoods.
They are hoping that the SONA, to be delivered by President John Dramani Mahama at the Parliament House in Accra on Friday, February 27 2026, would provide clear policy direction and renewed commitment towards addressing the development challenges facing communities in the district.
In separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the residents said progress on critical infrastructure remained slow, affecting socio-economic development across communities in the district.
They noted that a number of projects, including school blocks, health facilities amongst others, had stalled over the years, urging government to provide clear timelines and funding commitments for their completion.
Madam Christiana Vinyo, food vendors and cold store operator at Battor, said persistent power outages continued to disrupt commercial activities, resulting in financial losses for small businesses.
“We expect the President to assure us of reliable electricity supply because the constant outages are affecting our work and reducing our income,” she said.
Mr Agbeko Dzamefe, a rice farmer and a trader appealed for urgent rehabilitation of major roads and feeder routes linking farming communities to market centres.
According to him, poor road conditions increased transportation costs, delayed movement of goods, and contributed to post-harvest losses.
Some residents also called for targeted interventions to support small and medium-scale enterprises and create employment opportunities for the youth to stimulate local economic growth.
The residents said decisive action on infrastructure and reliable power supply would significantly improve living standards and enhance economic productivity in the enclave.
