The Ghana Navy has concluded a search operation, rescuing 71 fishermen who got stranded following a pirate attack off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano/Senya Bereku in the Central Region.
In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said the search and rescue operations, which started at dawn on Thursday, February 26, were approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast.
It reported that the robbers disposed of the entire crew of the fishermen who were aboard Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, Berema Nsukwa and other boats of their outboard motors and personal belongings.
“The Ghana Navy carried out the rescue efforts together with the Ghana Air Force, supported by the local fishermen from Nyanyanoi, Senya Bereku general areas. Ghana Navy Special Boat Squadron with fast interceptors supported by other Ghana Navy Ships from Eastern and Western Naval Commands were key to the rescue mission, which resulted in the safe evacuation from sea of 24 and 47 of the victims to Tema and Senya Bereku respectively.”
It further dispelled reports that some Ghanaian fishermen had been kidnapped.
Announcing a continued patrol operation on Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone, the GAF urged fishermen and maritime users to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity, as the situation is being assessed.
