President John Dramani Mahama will today deliver his State of the Nation Address to Parliament, outlining progress on key policy initiatives and setting out his administration’s priorities for the year ahead.
The address, presented in fulfilment of his constitutional obligation under Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, is the second of his second term in office. It comes exactly a year after he stood before the House in 2025 to describe what he termed an economy weighed down by high inflation, currency depreciation and unsustainable debt, while promising a comprehensive reset of the country’s trajectory.
This year’s address is widely expected to serve as a progress report on the economic stabilisation measures and flagship programmes rolled out over the past twelve months.
Official data ahead of the speech indicates a marked shift in macroeconomic conditions. Inflation closed 2025 at 5.4 per cent, down sharply from 23.8 per cent in December 2024. The Ghana cedi also recorded its first annual appreciation against the United States dollar since 1994, a development that allowed the Bank of Ghana to cut the Monetary Policy Rate by 1,000 basis points.
Despite these gains, cost-of-living pressures remain a dominant concern for many households, and the President is expected to acknowledge that economic recovery at the macro level has not fully translated into relief for ordinary citizens.
Attention will also focus on the government’s flagship 24 Hour Economy Policy and the newly established Authority tasked with overseeing its implementation. Ghanaians are looking for measurable outcomes and timelines rather than broad policy statements.
Parliament has finalised arrangements for the event. The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has indicated that Members of Parliament are expected to be seated by 9:15 a.m., with the President formally welcomed into the Chamber at 10 a.m. The Speaker, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, will preside over the joint sitting, attended by government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and invited dignitaries.
The address will be broadcast live nationwide. Viewers are encouraged to tune in to follow the full speech and assess the President’s account of progress and his roadmap for the year ahead on the link below;
