The Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church at Burma Camp has set in motion a two-year programme of activities to celebrate its 70th anniversary with the unveiling of a commemorative logo.

The anniversary is on the theme: “70 Years of God’s Grace in Fulfilling Our Christian Mission: Our Gratitude, Sacrifice, Service and Praise.”

Founded in 1957, the same year as the country’s independence, the church has served as a symbol of Christian unity within the military community, bringing together Methodist and Presbyterian traditions under one congregation.

Year-long activities

As part of the celebration, the church has outlined a two-year calendar of activities from 2026 to 2027.

Programmed in quarterly schedules, the activities will include a sod-cutting ceremony, Easter fundraising activities, and hosting fun games and retreats.

There will also be a September Fest, an anniversary lecture, a testimony convention and an entrepreneurship drive, while the fourth quarter will be marked by a corporate dinner and revival outreach.

Additionally, the church will organise a musical concert, a health walk and local evangelism, a love feast, a second anniversary lecture and a Christian living series.

The celebrations will climax in the fourth quarter of 2027 with the 70th Anniversary Harvest in October, alongside a GMPC debate and a singing competition.

Legacy project

During the launch, there was also the introduction of a legacy vision, which includes plans to construct a Manse and a children’s playground within the next three years.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Brigadier General Salase Gagakuma, said the projects reflected the church’s commitment to sustaining its mission and investing in future generations.

He appealed to members, families, friends and well-wishers to support the legacy projects with cash and materials, stressing that the anniversary was not only a time for reflection, but also a call to action to strengthen the church’s mission of spreading the gospel and supporting the needy.

A celebration of impact

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, described the milestone as a celebration not merely of longevity but of impact, resilience, discipline and unwavering commitment to Christian duty.

“For seventy years, this church has been a living testimony to what God can accomplish through a faithful people,” he said.

He commended the church for demonstrating faith in action through worship, youth formation, welfare, outreach and pastoral care within Burma Camp and beyond.

He praised the Men’s Fellowship, Women’s Fellowship, Youth, Choir, Singing Band, Junior Youth, Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade and Sunday School for strengthening the body of Christ and contributing to the spiritual and moral fabric of the Ghana Armed Forces and the nation.

He expressed particular admiration for the proposed Manse and the children’s playground, describing them as initiatives that demonstrated foresight and stewardship.

“On behalf of myself and the government of Ghana, I warmly congratulate the Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church for nearly seventy years of steadfast faith and visible contribution to the moral and social well-being of our nation,” the deputy minister said.
