The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has convened a high-level meeting to deliberate on the proposed 2026 allocation formula for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
The new formula, described as a major reset in education financing, is anchored on enhanced transparency, fairness in distribution and strategic alignment with national education priorities.
The framework, it is said, is designed to strengthen efficiency, equity and accountability in the financing of Ghana’s education sector.
The meeting brought together the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak; the Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, the Administrator of Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and the Management of the Ministry of Education.
Resetting allocation framework
A statement signed and issued by the Press Secretary of the Minister of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, said the discussions were focused, constructive and forward-looking.
It stated that the proposed 2026 framework marked the beginning of the full operationalisation of a revised allocation formula aligned with the reset agenda of President John Dramani Mahama.
A key feature of the proposed formula is the introduction of a dedicated funding stream for Special Needs Education and disability support.
The move is expected to improve access to inclusive education and provide targeted resources for learners with disabilities across the country.
KNUST Teaching Hospital
The statement said the framework also reflected President Mahama’s pledge to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to complete and adequately resource the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Teaching Hospital.
It said the facility was intended to support healthcare training and service delivery, particularly for medical students and professionals associated with the KNUST.
Ready for Parliament
The statement quoted the sector minister, Mr Iddrisu, as expressing satisfaction with the strong consensus reached, indicating that the proposed formula was now ready to be laid before Parliament for consideration and approval.
The engagement, according to the statement, underscored the growing collaboration among the Ministry of Education, Parliament and GETFund in advancing reforms aimed at strengthening Ghana’s education financing architecture.
