Ghanata Senior High School has launched its 90th anniversary celebrations, setting in motion a year-long programme that will culminate in a grand celebration in September.
The launch ceremony held last Saturday, February 28, 2026, in Accra drew alumni groups, students, staff, board members and dignitaries, who gathered to unveil the anniversary logo, declare the celebrations open and rally support for the school’s development agenda.
It had the theme, “90 Years of excellence in education: Unlocking minds, nurturing leadership and shaping futures.”
Celebrations
The anniversary programme will run in tandem with legacy projects, including the beautification and branding of the main gate, construction of modern washroom facilities, upgrading of the ICT centre, enhancement of science laboratories, and the establishment of an endowment fund.
In March, the school will conduct a publicity and awareness campaign, update alumni registrations and data, and run the Ghanata Memories Campaign featuring photographs, stories, and memorabilia.
The month of April will feature the distinguished alumni lecture series, career guidance and mentorship sessions, and academic excellence awards for students and staff.
For the month of May, the school will have a health outreach programme, a community clean-up exercise, and educational outreach to selected basic schools.
June activities will include various sporting activities for fund-raising and bonding, health and wellness programmes, and an anniversary float.
The school will focus on a fund-raising drive for legacy projects, groundbreaking and inauguration of selected projects in July while August will see the launch of an anniversary brochure, and a food and cultural fair.
The activities will culminate in speech and prize-giving day, an anniversary lecture, inauguration of completed projects and a homecoming ceremony in September.
It will also feature an old students’ storytelling night, a bonfire night with songs, cadet drills, and an anniversary thanksgiving service.
Commitment
The Headmistress of the school, Constance Amofa, called for renewed commitment and collective effort from all stakeholders to ensure a successful anniversary year.
She urged them to continue to embody the narrative of determination, discipline and national impact that had defined the school since its establishment in 1936.
“As we commence this 90th anniversary and celebrate the spirit of Ghanata, let us reconnect and let this moment inspire us to strive for excellence,” she stated.
Mrs Amofa also described the alumni as an embodiment of the school’s legacy and urged them to give back selflessly to their alma mater.
Shared responsibility
For his part, the President of the Ghanata Old Students Association (GOSA), David Annang, delivered the keynote address and framed the anniversary as both a celebration and a call to action.
He said that the launch marked a renewal of collective responsibility among alumni, parents, government and staff.
Mr Annang acknowledged significant challenges that the school had faced in recent years, calling for combined efforts to address them and secure a stronger future for the school.
