Three inmates have been discharged from the Ho Central Prison as part of the Justice for All programme to reduce prison congestion and speed up justice delivery.
They were among 19 inmates whose cases were heard by Justices Stephen Kumi and Rosemari Efua Asante in two mobile courtrooms.
At the end of proceedings on March 4, 2026, three inmates were acquitted and discharged, ten granted bail, one granted self-recognisance bail, one sentenced to one month imprisonment with hard labour, and one denied bail.
“Three inmates were also referred for psychiatric examination,” the Ghana Prison Service reported in a statement on Thursday.
In line with the Justice for All Programme, 21 remand inmates in the Tamale Central Prison were granted bail on March 3 following an in-prison court sitting to review cases of remand prisoners who have served long periods in remand.
Initiative
At a pre-media engagement at the forecourt of the prison, Her Ladyship Justice Angelina Mensah Aomiah asserted that the prison is overpopulated, with the lock-up standing at 291 against an authorised capacity of 78, of which 101 are remand prisoners.
According to her, the remand cell capacity is 16-20, but currently holds 101 inmates.
She explained that the criteria used involved motions filed by Legal Aid on behalf of the inmates to the Attorney General’s Department.
These motions are reviewed by Judges with special warrants.
