Today, 6th March, 2026, marks 69 years since Ghana gained independence, a historic moment that changed the course of Africa’s struggle for freedom. On March 6, 1957, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah boldly declared that the Gold Coast was free from British colonial rule, giving birth to the sovereign nation now known as Ghana.

Ghana’s independence was more than a national victory, it was a beacon of hope for the entire African continent. As the first sub-Saharan African country to break free from colonial rule, Ghana inspired many other nations to pursue their own freedom and self-determination.

Today, as the nation commemorates Ghana Independence Day, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the founding fathers and countless unsung heroes whose determination secured the freedom we enjoy today. Their vision laid the foundation for the democratic and united nation we continue to build.

While celebrating this milestone, the day also reminds Ghanaians of the collective responsibility to protect the country’s democracy, promote unity, and work towards national development for future generations.

Happy 69th Independence Day, Ghana, may the spirit of freedom, unity, and progress continue to guide the nation forward.
