Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has been appointed by the African Union (AU) to head its Election Observation Mission to the Republic of the Congo ahead of the country’s presidential election scheduled for March 15, 2026.

A statement issued on Tuesday, March 10, by the Office of the former President confirmed that Akufo-Addo will lead the mission tasked with monitoring the electoral process in the Central African nation.

The observation team is expected to be deployed next week to assess the credibility and transparency of the polls. It will include members of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee, representatives from the Pan-African Parliament, the African Governance Platform, election management bodies, independent election experts, civil society organisations, as well as women’s and youth group representatives.

Akufo-Addo is scheduled to depart Accra on Friday, March 13, and return on March 18, 2026, following the completion of the assignment.

The AU’s election observation missions are designed to promote credible elections, strengthen democratic institutions, and support good governance across Africa.
