The Office of former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has confirmed his appointment by the African Union (AU) to head its Elections Observation Mission to the Republic of Congo.

In a statement released on Tuesday, March 10, the Office announced that the former President will lead a team of international observers to monitor the presidential election scheduled for Sunday, 15th March, 2026.

According to the release, the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) is a comprehensive delegation comprising members of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), representatives from the Pan African Parliament (PAP), and the African Governance Platform.

It will also include officials from election management bodies, independent election experts, civil society organisations, as well as advocates for women and youth groups.

“Former President Akufo-Addo is expected to leave Accra on Friday, 13th March, and return on 18th March, 2026,” parts of the statement read.

The former President’s office emphasised that the mission aligns with the African Union’s broader objective of deploying observer teams to provide impartial assessments of transparency and fairness in member states’ electoral processes.
