The Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) Kumasi District Society has launched its 40th anniversary celebration since the establishment of the association in the Ashanti Regional capital.
The celebration, on the theme: “40 years of upholding integrity: Celebrating our past and empowering the next generation of Accountants”, is a moment of collective reflection, resilience and a reaffirmation of the vision that brought the association together.
Wider perspectives
Speaking at the event last Friday, the President of ICAG, Augustine Addo, challenged the members to have wider perspectives about issues relating to their chosen field.
“As the world moves towards global market economies and with investments and operations crossing borders to greater heights, professional accountants need a broader global outlook to understand the context in which business organisations operate,” he said.
He urged them to place emphasis on a set of professional knowledge, skills, values and ethics that would be broad enough to enable them to wade through challenging periods in the performance of their duties.
He advised them to uphold integrity and morality as professional accountants to smoke out perpetrators of fraud in their working environment, stressing that “you must ensure that morality and uprightness prevail in our public and financial space”.
He said accountancy education was moving beyond figure crunching and, therefore, entreated accountants to acquire analytical, communication, information technology and ethical skills to excel in their profession.
“Technological advancements such as mobility, social collaboration, digital service delivery, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, among others, are coming together to create a new normal. Accountants who cannot understand the workings of these embedded technologies will be extinct in the next few years,” he stated.
Other speakers
The Chief of Toase, Nana Yim Awere Ababio, who was the guest of honour, advised accountants to practise the profession that would shore up public confidence in them and further told them to adopt new ways to add value to their work.

In a welcome address, the Chairman of Kumasi District Society, David Adjei Abbam, paid glowing tribute to the founders and pioneers for laying a solid foundation that sustained the society to date.
A former President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Frank Serebour, who chaired the event, admonished them to exhibit integrity and emotional intelligence as they experience frustration in their work.
