The Assembly Member for the New Nsuta “Auntie Bee” Electoral Area, David Mensah Odoom, has been elected the Presiding Member (PM) of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region.

Mr Odoom secured 24 out of the 27 valid votes cast in what was described as a smooth and transparent election process.

He contested the position with the Assembly Member for the Anyinam Electoral Area, Solomon Amoako Acheampong, who obtained the remaining three votes. There were no spoilt or rejected ballots.

Assembly

The Obuasi Municipal Assembly is made up of 19 elected assembly members, nine government appointees, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the Member of Parliament, who does not have voting rights in the election of the presiding member.

In total, the assembly has 30 members; however, two members were absent and did not participate in the election.

The election was conducted by officials of the Electoral Commission, led by the Municipal Electoral Officer, Ebenezer Osei Tutu, who also served as the Returning Officer.

Following his declaration, Mr Odoom was sworn in as Presiding Member by Kofi Wusu Sekyere, a magistrate in Obuasi, officially marking the commencement of his tenure.

Acceptance Speech

In his acceptance speech, Mr Odoom called for unity among assembly members, urging them to work together to advance the municipality’s development agenda.

He emphasised his commitment to selfless leadership and inclusive governance.

As part of his immediate priorities, Mr Odoom indicated plans to renovate the assembly hall to create a more conducive environment for deliberations.

MCE’s remarks

Addressing the assembly, the Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, appealed to all assembly members to continue contributing their quota toward the development of the municipality.

She emphasised that development was a shared responsibility, noting that while assembly members have their roles to play, she and the assembly’s management team remain equally committed to fulfilling their mandate.
