Greater Accra signalling readiness to become an NDC stronghold – Asiedu Nketia

The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed profound gratitude to the electorate in the Greater Accra Region for voting overwhelmingly for the party during the 2024 Ghana general election.

He said the region’s voting trend over time shows increasing support for the party and could soon see Greater Accra counted among the strongholds of the NDC.

Asiedu Nketia made the remarks while addressing party officials and loyalists on Thursday in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, where his ongoing national thank-you tour made its next stop.

He told his audience that during the electioneering period, and ahead of voting, the party visited the constituency to call for hard work because the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) had planned to remain in office and had put measures in place to achieve that.

According to Asiedu Nketia, if the polls had been a close contest, there was strong suspicion that the then government could have manipulated the numbers to remain in office.

There was, therefore, general agreement that the NDC had to hand the NPP a “sound beating” to take the contest beyond any dispute.

He maintained that although the party was confident of victory, it was critical to ensure that no one in the NPP could challenge the outcome.

He said that in many places, including the traditional strongholds of the NPP, many voters who were frustrated by what he described as poor governance at the time voted for the NDC.

According to Asiedu Nketia, the case of the Greater Accra Region was particularly encouraging. Out of the region’s 34 constituencies, the NDC won 29 seats. And of the remaining seats, three recorded “skirt and blouse” voting, with John Dramani Mahama winning the presidential vote while the party’s parliamentary candidates lost those constituencies.

I believe Greater Accra is on its way to becoming an NDC stronghold, he said to loud applause from party supporters.

He said the thank-you tour was being organised in appreciation of the “marvellous work” done by party supporters and appealed to them to vote even more massively for the party in future elections.

On behalf of the party’s leadership, he expressed profound gratitude to the constituents for their support and extended appreciation to traditional authorities and the clergy for their prayers, which he said ensured peace during and after the election.

He said the party had feared that the NPP might foment trouble during the election, but the aftermath of the polls — which produced what he described as a good president and a resounding victory — ensured there was no room for such developments.

He added that the party had been in office for about a year and it was necessary to review its performance to assess whether it was fulfilling its promises to the people.

The Member of Parliament for the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Joe Tetteh, and Samuel Tetteh, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, also briefed the party chairman and followers on development needs, challenges, and progress on various infrastructure projects in the constituency.
