The Prempeh Assembly Hall District Court 2, presided over by Her Worship Deborah Gyawa Donkor, has handed down a fine and jail term to two traders for openly cooking inside Alabar Market.
One of the traders, identified as Fati Seidu, was fined 100 penalty units, equivalent to GHS 1,200, while the other, identified as Kande Seidu, was sentenced to 20 days imprisonment for disrespecting the court.
A statement by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) said the two were found preparing food with an open fire at an unauthorised location within the market in violation of Sections 27 and 29 of the KMA By-Laws (2020).
The law enjoins public markets and food vendors to cook their meals outside the market and only bring the prepared food to the market for sale.
“Despite several warnings from Environmental Health Officers to desist from the practice, the individuals failed to comply and were subsequently served with a court summons on 15th January 2026.”
The judgment was delivered on March 16, 2026.
“The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly reiterates its commitment to enforcing sanitation and market regulations to promote a safe, hygienic, and orderly trading environment.
“The public, particularly food vendors, is strongly advised to comply with the KMA By-Laws to avoid sanctions.”
