The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested a suspected supplier of Indian hemp believed to be operating within the Tamale Metropolis.
The suspect, identified as Lukman Karim, a farmer residing at Diare, a suburb of Tamale, was arrested on Friday, March 13, 2026, by officers from the Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (RPID).
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Alhassan Luckman Niendow, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, who disclosed this in a release sighted by the Ghana News Agency in Tamale, said the arrest followed intelligence-led operations by the police after they monitored suspicious activities linked to the suspect.
He said preliminary investigations indicated that Karim was allegedly cultivating and supplying Indian hemp to markets within the Tamale Metropolis.
He said, “At about 1730 hours, the intelligence team moved to the suspect’s residence at Diare where he was apprehended.”
He said a search conducted at the premises led to the discovery of two and a half large sacks of soya beans suspected to be concealing quantities of the Indian hemp.
The Command said during the arrest, the suspect attempted to offer GH¢20,000.00 to the officers in an effort to influence them to release him but the officers rejected the offer and proceeded with the arrest.
ASP Niendow said during interrogation, the suspect reportedly mentioned one Alhaji Moro as an accomplice in the alleged drug supply activities.
Police said efforts were underway to locate and arrest the accomplice as part of ongoing operations to dismantle the suspected drug supply network.
The suspect and the exhibits have since been transported to the Northern Regional Police Headquarters in Tamale and handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit for further investigations and possible prosecution.
