The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has decided to maintain the current transport fares amid an upward adjustment of fuel prices at the various pumps.
This was confirmed by Samuel Amoah, Deputy PRO of the Union, following a meeting by leadership on March 16, when the new pricing took effect.
“During the meeting, we agreed that previously, we saw a reduction up to a single digit, and with that, commuters were calling for a reduction in fares, but we didn’t do that; we didn’t see the stability of the petroleum product.
“Where it has gotten to, leadership has met, and we have agreed that as it stands, we are not going to come in with any increment of transport fares for now, but we will check if this is going to be stable or what will happen next,” he told TV3 in an interview.
He used the occasion to discourage members from proceeding with any increment, assuring that such an action would take place in due course when necessitated.
“Nobody should go and increase transport fares. We don’t just wake up and increase transport fares. There is a process we go through. Drivers must maintain what they are taking for now. When it comes to a point where we are to increase, we will duly communicate.”
Petrol is selling between GHC11. 57p and GHC13.29p at various pumps, while diesel goes for between GHC14.35p and GHC16.29p.
