The Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education, Amedzofe (AMECO), continues to turn away many qualified applicants due to inadequate infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of prospective students.
“This is a very painful decision. Our institution continues to grow and expand, and the demand for improved infrastructure and other facilities has also increased significantly,” the Principal, Dr Dickson Tsey, said.
He was speaking at the college’s 19th matriculation ceremony held at Amedzofe on Wednesday, March 11.
A total of 333 fresh students were admitted for the 2025/2026 academic year, representing the second-highest intake in the past seven years.
Dr Tsey explained that the admissions were made from a pool of 756 applicants, highlighting the increasing demand for placement at the institution.
The new entrants comprise 169 males and 165 females, reflecting near gender parity.
Out of the total number, 170 students are pursuing a Bachelor of Education in Junior High School (JHS) Education, while 92 are enrolled in Primary Education.
Additionally, 39 students are offering Early Grade Education, and 32 are pursuing JHS Education in French.
The Principal expressed gratitude to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the government for their support, which made the admissions possible.
He added that the college also admitted talented sportsmen and women based on their sporting abilities, noting that such candidates also met the general entry requirements.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at providing opportunities for students to develop their natural talents while enhancing the college’s performance in sports.
Dr Tsey further noted that AMECO had, over the years, been deliberate in promoting gender balance, a goal reflected in this year’s admissions.
80th anniversary plans
Dr Tsey announced that the college would celebrate its 80th anniversary this year, an occasion expected to help address some of its longstanding challenges.
He said key priority areas included tackling the perennial water shortage, constructing a modern auditorium, providing additional staff bungalows, improving the road network on campus, and expanding the administration block to enhance operational efficiency.
The Principal urged the fresh students to remain focused on their studies and work diligently towards a successful future.
The ceremony was attended by the Ho West District Chief Executive, Prosper Francis Dusey.
