The Ghana National Fire Service (GNS) has reported that a total of 12 firefighters were wounded while fighting a blaze from an explosion caused by a fuel tanker carrying 54,000 litres of petrol at Gomoa Potsin in the Central Region.

The officers were personnel from the Apam and Kasoa Fire Stations who responded to the blaze recorded on March 17, 2025 around 6 am.

According to the Service, officers got injured when fire reignited from the tanker and exploded during cooling operations.

Out of the injured personnel, four were reported as having severe injuries, with three of them rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital and the remaining one treated at the Potsin Polyclinic.

The remaining eight (8) sustained minor injuries and were treated on-site by the Ambulance Service Team.

“All the severely injured firefighters have since been treated and discharged,” it reported.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Commander, ACO I Merinder Mary Attigah Mensah, in the company of the Director of Operations, DCFO Roberta Aggrey Ghanson, visited both the injured personnel and the incident scene earlier today and assured them of Management’s commitment to their welfare and full recovery.

Blaze
The fire started after the tanker crashed. Both driver and mate escaped unhurt.

The fire officers responded rapidly to the blaze, which was spreading to nearby properties and posed a significant risk to lives and infrastructure.

They successfully contained the fire through coordinated and tactical firefighting efforts and subsequently extinguished it around 8 pm before it reignited and exploded.

“Firefighters remain at the scene to ensure safety as arrangements are underway for the safe transfer of the remaining petrol from the affected tanker into another tanker.”

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

“The Service reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property and remains deeply concerned about the safety and welfare of its personnel. The Service extends its best wishes for continued recovery to the affected firefighters and expresses sincere empathy to all victims of this unfortunate incident.”
