The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has expressed optimism that the Greater Accra Region is becoming a stronghold of the NDC.
That, he explained, was evidenced in the region’s voting trend, which shows the increasing support for the party.
“I believe Greater Accra is on its way to becoming an NDC stronghold,” he said.
Thank You Tour
Addressing party officials and supporters in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency as part of his thank you tour, Mr Asiedu Nketiah was grateful to the electorate in the Greater Accra Region for voting overwhelmingly for the party during the 2024 general election.
He told the party officials that during the electioneering period, the party officials visited the constituency to call for hard work because the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) had planned to remain in office and had put measures in place to achieve that.
“There was, therefore, general agreement that the NDC had to hand the NPP a ‘sound beating’ to take the contest beyond any dispute,” he stated.
He said although the party was confident of victory, it was critical to ensure that no one in the NPP could challenge the outcome.
Voters
Mr Asiedu Nketiah noted that the strategy of the NDC worked as many voters, including those at the traditional strongholds of the NPP, who were frustrated by what he described as poor governance at the time, voted for the NDC.
He described the massive votes in the Greater Accra Region as encouraging, as out of the region’s 34 constituencies, the NDC won 29 seats.
He said three of the remaining seats recorded “skirt and blouse” voting, with President John Dramani Mahama winning the presidential vote while the party’s parliamentary candidates lost those constituencies.
Gratitude
Mr Asiedu Nketiah expressed gratitude to the constituents for their support and extended appreciation to traditional authorities and the Clergy for their prayers, which he said ensured peace during and after the election.
Having been in office for a year, he said, the party was reviewing its performance to assess whether it was fulfilling its promises to the people.
The NDC Member of Parliament for the Kpone Katamanso Constituency, Joe Tetteh, and the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Samuel Tetteh, also briefed the party chairman and followers on development needs, challenges, and progress on various infrastructure projects in the constituency.
