A 54-member contingent of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has returned home after a 90-day deployment to Jamaica, where it supported recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa.

The team was welcomed by President John Dramani Mahama at a mission accomplishment parade organised by GAF at the 48 Engineers Parade Square, Wajir Barracks, Teshie.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi; the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, service chiefs, senior officers, families of the troops and pupils from schools within the Wajir Barracks enclave.

Commendation

The President presented them with a citation in recognition of their outstanding service and contribution to improving living conditions in affected communities in Jamaica.

He also praised the Officer Commanding, Colonel Emmanuel Asia, for his exemplary leadership.

President Mahama further commended the personnel for displaying professionalism, discipline and dedication, which he said led to the successful execution of their task.

The President said the deployment formed part of the country’s commitment to international humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

He said the successful mission had also strengthened cooperation between Ghana, Jamaica and other Caribbean countries.

Background

The team was deployed in December, 2025 to support the recovery efforts in Jamaica following the destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, and in its wake, heavy rainfall, strong winds and flooding across several parishes, especially in the southern parts of the country.

Saint Elizabeth Parish was among the hardest hit areas.

In communities such as Middle Quarters and Black River, some damage was also recorded to homes, roads and drainage systems.

Many residents were displaced after roofs were ripped off and buildings collapsed.
