Workers of the Railway Workers Union staged a demonstration at the Ministry of Transport this afternoon, protesting what they described as the government’s failure to pay their salaries for the past 14 months.
The workers, dressed predominantly in red, carried placards with messages such as “13 months no salary – how can we survive?” and “Railway is the backbone of development – workers deserve stability.”
They say the prolonged delay is severely affecting their lives and families.
The protesters submitted a petition to the government, calling for a prompt response to their grievances.
The Chief Director of the Ministry of Transport received the petition and assured the workers that steps are underway to resolve the matter.
“The process has begun and will run to completion. We believe that by the end of next week, we will receive a response from the Ministry of Finance. Based on that, we can determine a payment date.
“We were at the Labour Commission yesterday, and we were given a timeline up to the end of April, but we hope to resolve this sooner. Please take heart – we understand your situation,” he said.
In an interview with JoyNews’ Stephen Mensah, the General Secretary of the Railway Workers Union, Benjamin Asuming, said there have been prior meetings with the National Labour Commission, but updates on salary payments have been slow.
He warned that the union would return to picket the Ministry on Tuesday if the issue is not resolved.
“We are here for them to tell us when we will receive our arrears. As the Chief Director is saying, if we don’t get a response by Wednesday, we will stay here until we see the cheque,” Asuming said.
