The Metropolitan Chief Imam of Tema, Sheikh Ahmed Hussein, has called on Ghanaians in general and Muslims in particular to embrace obedience, unity and compassion as the country celebrates this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr.
Delivering his message to worshippers at the Tema Sports Stadium on Friday, March 20, 2026, the Chief Imam urged Muslims to express gratitude to Allah for the strength granted during the holy month of Ramadan. He emphasised the importance of supporting the less privileged through Zakat al-Fitr, a mandatory form of charity for those in need.
He explained that the practice is required of all Muslims with the means, regardless of age or gender, and serves as a reminder of compassion, social responsibility and care for the vulnerable in society.
The Chief Imam also stressed the need for unity across religious, ethnic and political divides, urging Ghanaians to coexist peacefully. He cautioned against excessive celebrations and reckless behaviour, particularly among the youth, noting that such actions could lead to avoidable tragedies.
The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ebi Bright, described Tema as a community where people support one another across faiths and backgrounds. She congratulated the Chief Imam on his recent coronation and praised his leadership, particularly his advocacy for Islamic education and youth empowerment.
She further assured the Muslim community of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly’s commitment to collaborating with religious leaders to address key issues, including education, skills development and employment opportunities for young people.
On his part, the Member of Parliament for Tema East, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, commended Muslims for their discipline and sacrifice during Ramadan.
The MP also stressed the importance of job creation and economic opportunities, expressing hope that prayers offered during Ramadan would translate into improved livelihoods for residents.
